The Covid era.
I've been back in Japan for nearly two years now. I arrived a few months before Corona hit and feel very lucky that I did.

I was the most contented I'd ever been 5 years ago. A beautiful place to live in the country by the sea, more toy work coming in then I had time to keep up with... Some big things changed and eventually the sheds and bungalow that made Bigmantoys so possible was no longer sustainable - bad lodgers, a couple of big promises that never came to fruition... Just then, Japan called like it knew what was happening - a paid tour and flights back with my old wrestlig promotion Triplesix. I sold everything I owned but a few boxes of my favorite books and toys and got myself a job in Japan (a self sponsored Visa is a nightmare to get unless you're here first).

All of a sudden I went from a self employed hermit in the sticks of England to a fully employed (as in I have a 9 - 5 job plus my other stuff) pro wrestler again. Amidst a global pandemic, no less. I never stopped taking digital sculpting commissions but was content enough with that and wasn't promoting my toymaking at all.

I bought a resin 3D printer on a whim and that was it. I'm not getting a job with Four Horsemen anytime soon but I am the type of guy that if you give me the slightest means to make and sell toys, I will carpet bomb the planet with my work. I will do it until I die. I also discovered some great apps on the phone for sculpting that have doubled my sculpting time. A lot of my stuff is sculpted on the train.

So that's it. Bigmantoys was hit with a chance lightning bolt and it came back to life, with all of my old customers and some new ones. Vinyl is already funded and underway. It is the most rewarding thing in my life.

It has been a weird time. I have been by myself for years with no real vision of the future. I have spent more time staring at the sea than I probably have talking to people. Now I live in Tokyo and ride the train past a giant Godzilla on the way to work and am wrestling regularly for a few companies.
Despite my previous lack of interest in personal promotion, I've accepted it as part of the game and you'll see me on my own Instagram now which I never did before.

The passing of my (and many people's) dear friend Ralph Niese last year blew my brain into the cosmos for a long time. I still zone out and shed a tear sometimes when I have enough time alone with my thoughts. I'm glad I got to spend some time with him the previous summer and see his smile again. A lot of us stumble around in life looking for an answer or our true North. Ralph inspired all kinds of people not only with the brilliance of his art but also his absolute authenticity to who he was and what he wanted to do.

While I live in a metropolis and move from morning to night, there's a bit of my soul sitting in Ralph's kitchen in Leipzig while he smokes, or sleeping on the empty beach on a sold day in Sussex while my morning resin pours cure, or just having the most fun imaginable with Luke and is family at Goodleg. All of these experiences are part of why I will always make toys. Whatever's happening in the background, like weight training, it somehow fits my life perfectly. Some of the deepest bonds I have with people are from my time in toymaking.

Anyway. My focus is on my micro figure line #bmtepic and scaling up production. I will absolutely get out of the city again before too long and find a bit place to use as a base of operations. I have so many solid ideas that need to get done. The journey is so rewarding that it's hard to care about the destination.

Bigmantoyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15385927271312435458noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359409149259237005.post-2139922886765703562020-04-01T04:27:00.000-07:002020-04-01T04:27:52.691-07:00BMT - Not dead. More like cocooned. I live in Japan now. In a small apartment with a full-time job and professional wrestling on weekends.

About 18 months ago, it became clear that I wouldn't be able to afford the rent on BMT studios (a large bungalow in the countryside with lots of sheds) without getting a lodger in. I did that twice and they each took turns ruining the place. It made it impossible to work properly at home. During this time, I got paid to come back to Japan for a reunion tour with my old wrestling company and felt like it was fate that I come back.

Between then and now I spent a few months between addresses, staying occasionally with Luke at Goodleg/Underworld Muscle in Germany and working on our Wo-Dan project, using the buck I sculpted for the PAGAN line. I also had 2 of my more successful ideas ripped off within a month of their release and realised that the Instagram movement for likes-at-any-cost is only getting worse and collectors do not care. I don't blame them - it's not the consumers job to have an interest in the history behind an idea.

Anyway, I'm still doing digital modelling commissions here and there, and as toymaking is my happy place, I will be producing again myself or getting into mass production as soon as logistics allow. I am perpetually on that mission.

That's what's going on, in case you were interested :)

You can follow the bigmantoys twitter in case you'd like to keep up to date on my wrestling adventures.

Bigmantoyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15385927271312435458noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359409149259237005.post-57983339326009196132019-08-02T05:23:00.001-07:002019-09-12T16:17:32.475-07:00Who's making resin toys now? Hello.

With a few rare exceptions, indie toymakers are not getting hits on their blogs. There are a handful that made it with Blogger and a web store back in the day and keep it going but since Instagram, everything has changed. It's the first time I've felt the tug of changing tide against what I thought worked.

Seven years ago, having the gumption to spend money on a pressure pot and work out what size baggies you needed was a big deal. Bootlegs and original resin pieces were lumped into the same category. I enjoy sculpting so that's what I've put my time into.

A thousand or so new resin artists later, and everything is different. You can never produce too many Skeletors or Boba-Fetts. That's the trump card. So, you know, eff that. Now, here are some a-ma-zing guys doing MOTU repro: Viktors Vintage, Master English, MOTU Molder Baz and about five or so more making really crisp work. My friendship with Austin Richards (Gold Dober) was the thread that held my interest in super-nice casting work. I will always have love for crispy clean casts in clear red resin.

The most inspiring to me over the past few years have been artists like ThatDamnJo, Jimmy Rommel, Eddie in the City, Vincha V, Underworld Muscle, Musculoids, Therojo, Better Days (off the top of my head). Prolific sculptors that make new universes. Also, it seems to be the final beating heart of original art in the resin toy scene. It's encouraging to see it. Keeps me buying the occasional bottle of silicone.

Then there's the old guard. The ones that were about before craft-beer and NWA hoodies ever came into contact with splashed resin. Resin model kits, statues, that kind of thing. Home-made Horror is one of my favorites. He makes really animated static sculpts of classic horror scenes. Eddie in the City kind of walks the line of that. It's minifigures that are not trying to be edgy or Japanese style. Straight up 2-3" painted (usually) resin pieces in a western comic style. Very cool.

So I'm thinking about where I want to fit into this all. For the time being, I'm getting by on Z-brush commissions and 3D printing. I will be in Japan this time next year - back in the world of professional wrestling and also earning a proper wage with a day job. That means less time and more money = outsourced production. I would really love to grow Pagan as a vinyl or PVC line but if people are getting Super 7 5.5s for $4 in Target... I'll need to think.

The line I've been planning for 6 years has been released as a seperate brand for a few months now. Aside from the 3 main characters released so far, there is a new unique figure or variant released every single Monday.
I'm using every trick I know to make these the most playable, and unique MOTU-inspired line I can. Huge 3D printed accessories, pewter weapons, deluxe blister cards and affordable clamshell packs, chains, fabric, original sculpting, interchangavle heads, cauldrons, ruins - and that's only what's been created so far!

Although the magicks of Wizards and Priestesses mean that time is not a straight line. Some of the demi-gods of the PAGAN world venture into Christian times and prehistoric, to make use of weapons and beasts their enemies might not yet know.

Although there are no heroes as we understand in this world, there are protaonists more noble than others. Powaslayyve is the only character so far to make a name for himself using purely brute strength. Honorable in combat, and not yet sullied by the politics and scheming that results in so much dark magic and bloodshed of innocents.

Indeed, behind every warlord is a coven or group of many women of great power. Whether it be poisons, charms, or future sight, these women command a powerful grip in the PAGAN world.

Aspects of expolitation horror movies, black metal, and adult comics are liberated in this line. There are already plenty of vanilla barbarians out there - this is for people that were around for the gritty stuff in the 70s and 80s and want a toy line that goes as dark.

I thought I'd take a few minutes out and further alienate the hipster collecorship by showing what a mddle aged nerd I am and talking about the principles I leanred working in sales, IT and tech, and translating them to the hand-to-mouth artisan existence I'm currently enjoying.

1: When being your own boss, be the toughest boss you've ever had.

It's Saturday night. I've turned down two different social things because I'm behind on my target. The best boss I ever had was an absolute savage. He made people cry. However, he was completely transparent about how businesses really work and what it takes. I made more stuff happen working under him and relised that I had double the energy I thought I had. I had days where I'd be falling asleep with a headache and have to try and grab a nap at a park before chugging more coffee and asprin and getting back in the office.

I realised that if I could do all that for him (as many of us do in our jobs) why couldn't I do that for me? You know you're legit when you've pulled 60 hours like a trooper and even if you didn't get all you wanted to done, you know what your best looked like.

2: Give your product every chance of success. SOMEONE will want it.

I've talked about "Emperor's new Clothes" syndrome lots of times. New guy makes bullshit and puts it on Instagram. You wouldn't even take a photo of it, it's that bad. But he believes in it and loves it He presents it with pride and tells you exactly why it's good. You see where he's coming from. You think it's good too now!

Look at some of comics that make it! Half the chicks on comic covers in the 90s looked boss eyed with different sized boobies. People got paid for that!!

Day of the Slug has sold next to nothing in the States. I was disappointed on its launch and started on something else. A few shares on Facebook to a few new people later and I was selling a few sets a week. good enough for me. Took a bag of them to conventions and handed a few out. Someone did a vid revew, someone posted them on their IG, and a year after release I was having to re-make the molds I was churning out that many.

I know artists that are good enough to sculpt for legit toy companies here in my home town that never even photograph their work, let alone think of selling it. Don't get embarassed. Flop it out!

3: Sweat your assets.

Selling IT solutions, there were a few principles that especially one-man-band artists could use. One is the principle of using a new tech combined with old junk (ancient laptops running software from a powerful new server) to make money-in to money-out ratio (return on investement) good.

My 2 casting set-ups, laptop, knock-off Wacom, and 3D printers cost a total of 700 pounds (about $1k US). and most of this has been with me for at least 4 years. My sculpting workflow includes 3D printing, PLASTER waste molds (why do that with silicone!?) and recyclable wax and clay. Much like the ugly but effective old trucks that are used in communist countries to enable commerce of the lastest tech, the cheap ugly plaster and rusty old tools and buckets I use to make the plaster shells for my silicone matrix molds are cheap, will last forever, and end up contributing to the same product.

4 Big strokes! Let the executive in you support the starving artist you.

In craft and life. I use large tools to speed up
work before I get started with little bits. An ancient giant file, a
belt sander, big craft knives, a soldering iron for sculpting wax
(before moving to a hot pen for the details). Your time and energy and
precious. You have to prioritise what's worth it and remember, the fact
you spent 60 hours making something the hard way unfortunately means as
much as someone casting something in clear pink that they sculpted in an
afternoon. It's shelf porn, and it won't move people like fine art. By
all means make the fine art as without it, art toys is a phrase that
really means nothing, but no one remembers martyrs (well, maybe Christ),
so give the artist you a chance by using some hustle.

5: Take the opportunity to Pilfer a Goat. (From the Chinese war-guide "The 36 Strategems".)

While you're focussed on your big moves, little opportunities may pop up. So take them. About 50% of my work isn't even related to releases. Blank pulls of stuff I released in the past, commissions (guaranteed money now vs. money later). It's not greasy - it's survival. The biggest, coolest franchises and companies are squeezing the pips with everything they can on the side because they know hard-core collectorship isn't something they can always count on. You can make TRUE art and stipend yourself with a on office job, or make TRUE art and side-hustle to make sure your art is given every chance it gets and more studio time.

No one's as classy as they appear and most of your favorite atheletes probably take steroids. It's survival!

6: Recycle everything.

Materials and work. I recycle silcone, I add bulking agents to materials, I make matrix molds, I take ruined molds and use them as templates for wax roughs. If people want something I made years ago, I want to help them have it if I can. A lot of my characters (and molds) have endured for years longer than I thought they would. So it never hurts to remind people that they're there to help them keep going.
WAVE 1 DROPPING MAY 20th 19:00 EDT.

I've been full time toy making for two months now. Enjoying the process of brushing up all the crafts involved in toymaking without a real goal. Making one-offs is fun and can pay the bills but I have really missed building on something.

I worked out that I've had about 60 releases since I started and something like 40 original sculpts. I like all toys which means I had made figures in almost every scale and material.
BMT HARDCORE is a format of 60mm tall thick SD rubber keshi. I plan to release every original character I've ever created as well as completely re-sculpt some of the stuff I kitbashed or even bootlegged in the early days of Bigmantoys.
This is me taking everything I've learned in the past 5 years and putting it all into one epic line.
The figures are digitally sculpted, 3D printed, copied in wax, re-sculpted by hand, and finally cast in indestructible PU rubber.

The header cards are spray painted stencils on cardstock. Everything from Zbrush to putty to spray paint comes together to make these. It's my proudest output so far and with the workflow I'm using, I'll be able to keep bringing out new releases.

Rather than a random splurge of casting, these figures will have limited runs of each colour so that as the line continues, people will know exactly how many of everything is out there, and how possible it is to get a complete collection. I don't just want the sculpts to be awesome, I want people to have holy grails from the line for their collection

What's even cooler is that I have already agreed on incorporating several characters from the lines of other indy toy companies (ones you will know and love) into the line.

An expanded universe of BMT and the coolest other lines out there all in the same format.
Finally, these are going to be affordable!
There's no paying 3rd party licences, gallery or convention expenses. These are made 100% by me in my little studio in England.
All you're paying for is the toy!Bigmantoyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15385927271312435458noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359409149259237005.post-88851113161607559352017-10-02T13:50:00.000-07:002019-06-18T09:51:50.365-07:00Re-attaching the creative nerve endings. If you're one of the 300 or so people with a vested interest in garage toy makers, you may have noticed my complete abscence from toy blogs, and little posted on social media.
A few things have happened. I've got a day job in the games industry. I'm not working as an artist but as an admirer of the craft, it's quite cool talking with people who've worked on games I've spent a lot of time playing myself. BUT it's a proper bloody job. I can't fuck about. Just as when someone gives me money for a toy, I owe them 100%, I have to give back to this company. I'm not the best sculptor, or the best producer but I like to think Bigmantoys had a work ethic that gave it a degree of "success".

So I made that Maniac Cop statue and went quiet. Other massive personal changes have attacked my free time. I know full well I could just glue a Trump head to a Ninja Turtle, fart out some resin copies, and get covered on all the hipster websites but its an unfun game when its that easy.

I've got money saved up for the first time. I have pitched, got very close, and failed to design and mass produce a few licenses I love. I'm in talks for more. I don't know which if any will work, but I can guarantee it'll be something I would collect for the price.

In the meantime, my minimal profit Shapeways shop is keeping the pulse going with regular releases, exploiting the strengths of the 3d printed medium.

Last week was s full color range of Mortal Kombat and Double Dragon minis.
Much more to come.
Heyoo!

He's in-store now at bigmantoys.bigcartel.com
Just $75 for a fully painted deluxe version, and $39 for a blank.

I had a really good time at Toycon this year. Got to meet up with my old mates and get to know some new ones better. Regardless of my stance on the whole custom Dunny thing, credit where it's due - the art was excellent.

Also got reminded how fickle the whole bootleg art toy scene is. You're only as good as your last gimmick a lot of the time so I thought eff it, I'm going to sculpt Maniac Cop.
Matt Cordell has been done before by the likes of Homemade Horror and another very rare 12" resin kit I've seen around. I wanted to make my own version, not quite as literal to the movie, but more cartoonish - kind of like something from Monster Squad or Scooby Doo.

He took me about a solid working week to sculpt, including base. I've represented every detail - from the zippers and buttons, to numbers on his badge and name-badge.
The deluxe version is polished and painted to the max, with 3 points of magnetic articulation. I'm only making 5 of these. After that, he'll be only available in kit form, for people who like to sand and paint their own.
This the 13th Edition of the full size classic Treegarr (not including a few one offs and *ahem* "tribute" figures out there). I've been on a real Friday the 13th binge - finally watching all of them in order for the first time. I even watched Jason X, God bless me.

For this one, I really wanted to have fun trying new things out and as is always the challenge with indy toys, do something no one could rip off easily. I've wanted to add a mask of some kind to the original 'Garr for years. I love Neca's retro Mego-style line of figures for all the little details and extra features so decided it was a good time to have a crack at it.

Treegarr's mask is all-rubber. I made a few resin ones but they kept chipping the paint on the eyes. Even when I coated them with PU varnish (used for boats) and left in the sun for a couple of days.
The PU rubber holds a wash just great, as well as opaque paint on thicker, less flexible parts.

The machete is cast in English pewter. Pretty much indestructible. I've recently invested some time and money into learning pewter casting. Resin weapons look great but no one can pretend a 4mm thick resin handle is going to last forever. I give these a black wash, acetone rub, and weather with a mix of different sandpapers and files.

The story I have in my head for this crossover is based on Jason Goes to Hell - where he becomes a possessive ghost. Treegarr is basically the same thing, except he possesses plant material rather than humans. Both of them are mute, without reason, but also intelligent and ruthlessly driven. Kind of a good match.
I've been trying every trick in the book I know to put a real new spin on the classic 5.5" barbarian format action figure. Been mixing 3D printing with putty and wax sculpting, and I don't think I've ever made so many experimental waste molds.
What I've distilled from all the playing around is a couple of rock solid ideas that I'm going to try and save until the whole PAGAN toys thing is ready to rock. I used to think people were crazy for keeping work-in-progress a secret. Not like anyone is reading blogs for ideas to rip off before they're ready right? Any self-respecting artist would surely want to know they've put something original in the world, no?
No. I've seen so many carbon copies of things people have been working on, as well as a few things that are scarily similar to my ideas (of people I didn't expect to know of my existence) get done at almost the exact same time, that I too have fallen victim to wanker-phobia.
Aaaaaanyway, here's what I CAN show you because you can buy it right now. Herbert West - REANIMATOR! Ever since I saw that Shapeways offer a full-color service, I've wanted to get on it. It's a real strength of the 3D printed format in that as it is no more labor, the price is the same as a monochrome figure. I'm really proud of the sculpt - I wanted it to be like SLUG Zombies or Monster in My Pocket in the way that it tells a story, rather than merely represent the character's likeness. Needle, severed living hand in bag, and blood on the sleeve. I could never have gotten Jeffrey Comb's cartoonised likeness this tight if I'd sculpted in wax or clay either. It's a real gem of an example of the benefits of digital. I still spent a ton of time on it, though.
I'm amazed at how well they came out and how affordable the full color versions are. Naturally they are also available in the same range of monochrome colors as my other killer horror minis, over at: . https://www.shapeways.com/shops/bigmantoys
I was honoured to sculpt the head for his next figure "Jade" a 3.75 version of the Green Baron Mego figure, complete with rocket-pack.
You can read more about it and get updates on Austin's blog here:

Life, if you're lucky enough to live somewhere like I (and likely you) do is like a video game - you pick your quests, your skills, and you dig deep when you get to the last stage and you think you have a chance of winning. Looking at it like this, my passion for making toys has been at an all-time high. If I have anything going for me at all, it's the fact that I enjoy the game of trying to get by as an independent artist and the variety that is an essential part of keeping it interesting.

I'm working on something you will have noticed if you follow my Instagram with a bunch of my most-trusted and serious 5.5 toymaker friends from Europe; Goodleg Toys, Peer Brauner, Ralph Niese, and Viktor's Vintage. It's a ton of work and will mean a lot of the non-fun stuff like business and money and whoring. I'll write more on it when we're a bit closer to having models finalised.

In the meantime, in the spirit of all surviving independent artists, I'm keeping the hand-cast stuff coming and bringing out designer-toys in new materials and colours all the time.

Just up in store is a super limited run of crystal clear Puppet MUSCLE (Puppet Master-inspired non official) minifigures, Double Dragon, and a re-release of my Mortal Kombat and Robocop (sculpted by Oscar Torres) minis.
Also, I'm very happy to say I've got a few pieces for sale at the MF Gallery in Brooklyn. Dave Brockie was a friend of the people running the show and had pieces displayed there. He's the only famous person I ever cried about when he died. Literally crying on the bus when I read it on Instagram. I made a special cross-hatched GG Allin bust. If I get invited again, I'll make something especially in Brockie's honour. I consider him one of the few realist workhorses to have made a success of themselves in showbiz - like Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Also, I know you're supposed to make out like you're chancing culture forever somehow every time you make a good size art piece these days and get people to do raffles at cons to sell your stuff (fucking works too! People really will buy an idea if you convince them it's got value to others) but I made another Skeletank. 40 or so hours of 3D printing with a military paint-job, and a Skeletor headed Wo-man in hand cast resin.
I know everyone with Facebook is the new Bill Hicks but you know, the world really is full of desensitized people who want to see other people killed at the moment. Can't stop feeling so lucky to live where I do. There are toddlers right now who are dealing with heavier concepts than I've ever even had to imagine. So I suppose this is a little satire on the vulgarity of pursuing war.
As I've got a lot more time to spend in the resin room, I'm really churning out stuff and trying to keep the shop full, keep coming up with new figures, and continuing on my current lines.
Treegarr is too much fun to play with so I'm releasing 4 new colorways; Emerald Ending, Radtacular Blood-sucker, Blazing Cold, and Maxx'd-Out.
I've fixed Wo-man's molds so I can at least finish the quota of 20 original colorway, and 10 Faker. I think it got to 7 original and 3 faker left (I'll have to check) so I'm introducing Slime-pit Wo-man (clear green) to give people more choice, and something for people with a complete Wo-man collection so far.

I also have quite a few flawed rubber bodies from my Remco-style buck (the static 5.5" body I've used for all my MOTU-style releases the past year or two). I'm going to stick random parts on them and put them in store as bootleg-style toys for super-cheap. I just need to clear out and I'm sure people will enjoy having a 5.5 you can throw down the stairs and never break.

On a day-to-day, BMT is growing for the first time in a long time. Having more time to give to it, I've been able to work on new ideas in the background and keep producing, and keeping the store interesting.

Inspiration is always there. Just cruising the right topics on Youtube or reading interviews with sculptors, and toymakers usually gets the juices flowing. New techniques in Z-brush, stuff people have made on Thingiverse, etc. usually stop me from picking up a joypad and procrastinating.
Before I'd ever made a single thing, San Francisco Toymakers (who made WCW and ECW figures at one poing) used to have a feature on their site in the early 2000s on how they sculpt, and tool their figures. That whole thing really excited me and I didn't forget about it until I was ready to start doing it myself.

Right, back to it. Cheers! :)Bigmantoyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15385927271312435458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359409149259237005.post-44022259167179559822016-10-07T10:36:00.001-07:002016-10-10T12:15:07.627-07:00My top tips for casting toys and figures in resin and rubber. Saving on materials, preventing bubbles. After 4 - 5 years of making primarily hand cast toys, I'm finally collaborating with the man who taught me how to pressure cast, Austin aka Gold Dober. I'm very honoured and personally very happy about it.
I've collaborate now with everyone (except for COTU world) who I looked at in the beginning and wanted to have a go at resin production myself. I'll update with details when I have them.

This isn't going to be a guide on how to cast for complete beginners, more a few things I've come up with along the way to help me with troublesome molds, and to save materials.

SILICONE STICKS TO SILICONE. MAKE THE MOST OF IT!

You probably know what a waste mold is - it's where you make a mold using waste silicone. Any silicone that isn't covered in mold release will bond with whatever curing silicone is next to it. Think of it like hardcore and concrete. Hardcore is cut up pieces of old mold, concrete is the new stuff which bonds it all together. You will need a pressure pot for this to work though.

RECYLCLE

All of my large molds are made with a lot of waste silicone.

Here you can see the blue chunks that were used from previous molds and the pink from new silicone. They are different shores, brands, etc, but it all sticks.

SPOT FIXING

I did a quick vid on instagram how to replace part of a mold that is mostly fine: https://www.instagram.com/p/BKbE1pagMXK/?taken-by=bigmantoys

As long as the original model is strapped in tight, the mold should be perfect. The rest of the mold will still give way eventually but these weak spots can be fixed several times. Here are the results of the above video, you can see the shapes that will make the negative shoulder articulation- ive already had perfect pulls from it:

RESIN - IT'S BETTER TO WASTE A LITTLE THAN WASTE THE LOT.

By that I mean, "topping up" molds where you haven't poured enough, or having bubbles because you didn't cut fat enough ducts make the sacrifice of a bit too much resin worth it.

With really bad undercuts, like the back of Blade's hat, I use a method of letting it leak. You can see that I've sculpted him so everything except the hook (which can be vented easily as it's near the feet) is facing upwards, meaning I could in theory have just one vent from the hook to the leg, and one from the feet to the bottom and I'd be fine.

But the back of the hat is facing the opposite direction. Casting in rubber, I wouldn't havea hope of that being bubble free...

So I drill a hole from the outside to the back of the hat's peak. The material leaks a tiny bit, but also takes all the bubbles with it.

Here's something you can do with fast curing stuff - stick a toothpick or stick all the way through...

Leave it in and pour the material (resin or whatevs) at the top.

Pull out the stick - it creates a vacuum, rushing material to the hole on the side.

OTHER GUERILLA METHODS

I learned with plaster before I used resin or silicone, and then i tried casting without a pressure pot or vacuum. I learned some stuff that still comes in handy.

1: Air can't go where something solid is.

I sculpted this giraffe head (Im putting this custom in store BTW) with horns at the top, they are narrow with bulbous tips, meaning theres an area that needs resin with a small amount of space for the resin to get though. Also, down at the bottom of the mold, air will get trapped there first.

So again, I put a stick there. It holds that narrow part open and also blocks anything (air or resin) from getting there.

Pour in the resin with the stick still in the mold.
Pull it out and dispose, as there is no air there to go to that part, all that can get in is resin. Obv works better with a pressure pot but helps still if you're not).

2: Poke, bang, and rock.

If you're casting something really thick, or are casting without a pressure pot, you can minimse bubbles in a few ways. You can poke the areas where bubbles happen before the resin cures, with a stick, you can bang the mold from several angles to try and smack out the bubbles, and you can pour a little resin in, and rock the mold. With only a little resin, rocking should make a shell inside the mold wihtout enough liquid to trap air (bubbles). Once that's at least half-cured, you can pour in the rest. Any bubbles will be internal, where you can't see em!

WHATS LEFT IN THE CUP

I try to always have a mold at hand with a wide opening that I can pour into quickly. All my leftover resin after a pour goes in these, and after a few pours, I end up with some bonus casts.
Also, I've recently expanded my Bigcartel store (upgraded account) and am putting in EVERYTHING I have in the studio. I'm really low on space so it's all priced to fly. http://bigmantoys.bigcartel.com/
Really having fun playing with random colorways for these new keshi.
Haven't gone crazy with resin for a long time and really happy with how
amazing these sculpts look in nicely polished resin.

I'm out of town at the moment so all these pics are WIPs from a week or so ago.

16BK (16-Bit Keshi)

Since getting into digital sculpting and 3D printing for my mini figures (most of them), I've been really into the work of Oscar Torres who I found on Instagram under the moniker "Creature Factory". The guy is CONSTANTLY busting out amazing 16-BIT gaming era-inspired keshi with his 3D printing skills. I picked up some of his stuff and was really impressed by the detail but when I saw his Robocop-inspired sculpt, I knew I really had to see this done in rubber.

At the same time, it's been a while since I have done time in the casting shed and had the mold ready for my Mortal Kombat-inpired ninja minifigure. Of course, Robocop was a movie before it was a game but the proportions of Oscar's sculpt, and the common themes of ultra-violence and cartoonish action in both Robocop and Mortal Kombat made them a pretty good marriage in my book.
They will come in a classic flesh rubber 2-pack for the MUSCLE / Kinnikuman / OMFG purists, as well as a limited open colorway run in resin of whatever I can make by the drop date.
The 2 pack will be about $25, while the singles will be $14 a pop.

GG ALLIN

In the Bigmantoys tradition of making the least commerically viable toys possible, I'm producing the GG Allin bust I started way back when I started learning Z-brush, in limited number.
For those that don't know, GG was a very intense rock'n'roller who died in the early 90s after many years of crash-and-burn living. He also occupies the most space on my MP3 player and has done since about 2004.
The bust stands at 5", and is made in glow-in-the-dark ABS. Limited to 10 pieces and just $30 each - cheap enough for the slimiest scumbag.

Yeah, it's been slow-going. Got a new full time job BUT with the GBP taking a hit recently, I might be able to afford to go part time again as your US Dollars are worth a ton more over here now :D Every cloud!

So first thing - I've got work in a couple of exhibitions at the moment - The "Skeletor and the Henchmen of the Universe" show at the hallowed ACME Superstore/Gallery in Florida (if I remember correctly). It's the same place that ran the BOSS KRANG exhibition last year - Enzo Garza's the guy. I consider it to be the most legit non-comic-con exhibition of from-the-heart nostalgia pieces.
It's my MK1 Skeletank - available for $145.
Interestingly, before MOTU had the title it has now, the "Masters of the Universe" was going to be the moniker for Skeletors Henchmen.

I also have a few pieces in my own town of Brighton (UK) at the Dynamite Gallery. A clear-yellow resin Treegarr, and an 8" prismatic glittered pink Bimmy (from Double Dragon - in case you're not a fan). You can buy them online here - http://dynamitegallery.com/collections/all-toys

Death Adder.

22cm tall, posable, and fucking brutal. My continuation of my Golden Axe 5.5 series carries on. I didn't make him 5.5 because in a 5.5 universe he wouldn't be. He's bigger than everyone else. Dropping later this month - Every 3D printed figure will come with several gimmicked out resin thunder fists.
Too much fun I guess. More 3D printing evangelism. Got a shipment through from Shapeways. Proof-copies of my Mortal Kombat-style ninja keshi, and treated myself to a Spinning Head Sunshine keshi from Brownnoise in the same shipment. Gotta love 3rd party production. I bought something someone else designed and something I designed made in the same factory and shipped in one. 3D printing in toys (aside from the mech/ MOTU community) isn't really believed in yet. I understand. Why buy something that's still got a reputation for being rough in finish from before various polishing and smoothing techniques were invented, when people are pooping out really nice chunks of resin using gimmick resin pigments - that stuff looks nice! Even a rubber ball looks pretty swish with enough glitter in it. I feel the reasons behind the apprehension!

3D printing has its limitations. Definitely. But if you approach the design from a practical toymakers' perspective ... are you still reading? ... If you do that, you can sculpt and optimise the figure to look good in its designated format. Same as vinyl toys vs PVC. The material matters to the sculpt.

So I picked up the first 3D Printed figure that I saw and thought "This is legit!". Brownnoises' SHSH.

First off, the spinning top (blue) fits MUCH better into the 3D printed part (orange) than it looks here. The plastic is flexible and after taking this pic, I fit it in super tight. Still poseable, no sign of potential damage at all. REAL sturdy. More than most resin, definitely.

Also - and I know this attitude of mine won't win me many friends outside the community of fellow toymakers - for the cost of Shapeways production and a tiny cut for the sculptor, you're buying a legit art piece. No, it isn't endorsed by a rapper who wants to make money from Kidrobot collectors, but this was designed really REALLY well. That's hours of sculpting, trial, and error. It's not an old MUSCLE figure. Pretty revolutionary if that's not too dramatic. Isn't it? I think that's worth the price of a handul of old MUSCLEs you can get any time.

That spinning top - the same one I've had since '89, has a body now. Thing looks like a beast. If I get another top, I'll likely get another sometime.

Onto my stuff. The Mortal Kombat keshi. I sculpted it to be 3D printed. Making sure there were no points less than 1mm thick. I dunno, I think it's pretty sick, isn't it? Looks pretty cool to me, anyway. I'll keep buying them for myself. They're available in my Shapeways store in every available color for not much at all.

Toy blogs aren't big hyping 3D printed keshi it would seem. There's enough of them out there that have had no coverage to suggest as much. Maybe it's a debate of how artistic it is to design, and have a machine make something, vs casting it by hand, whether you designed it or not. Probably being too analytical. Not cool, man.

Been invited back the toy convention with heart, Roll Out Roll Call, as a guest again. Really happy about that. It's in London this time too. If you have a legit interest in toy history and behind the scenes in how all your favorite lines were made, I can't recommend it enough. Plus, FLOORs of Takara, Hasbro, Mattel, and even stuff by little poopers like me.

Bigmantoyshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15385927271312435458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8359409149259237005.post-17667839561527229162016-05-10T15:03:00.000-07:002016-05-10T15:05:09.138-07:00Tanks and statues. 3D printing is the pajamas!Been a while again. Counter says I've got 42 thousand visits. That can't be right? I'm calling bot shenanigans, unless people are genuinely interested in what goes on behind the scenes of an indy toy-making house.

Been busy as flip here. Actually decreasing time in the resin room to focus more on sculpting, and got a better paid day-job with more hours so I can drop some skrilla into mass production. Also talking to some people about getting big stuff done with some legit licenses. Not sure if it'll happen but I'll definitely give it my best shot. If I can put in 30 hours a week on TOP of my day-job to to make hordes of resin toys that may or may not sell well, I can definitely graft the role of project manager and marketing on a crowd-funding project, which may see affordable PVC toys of my favorite horror characters to the masses. Think MWOTR but with horror and game characters.

So, I'm basically making the art I want to make project-by-project on the weekends and trying to work on bigger, long-term projects in the background. I am DONE casting other people's sculpts. I'm not "dissing" the bootleg scene at all. I am a customer and fan of it, with the exchange rate being what it is (me being in England and most collectors being in the States), casting and sanding for a living is no lark, I can tell you.

So here's a little info on two recent projects I have started. Might make more down the road, but for now it's been a labor of love seeing how far an imagination and a 3D printer can take me.

SKELETANK

I sculpted this to see how big I could go, how sturdy a 3D print of this scale could be, and because I like to do something original.
I was mostly sculpted as one big piece in Z-brush, then cut into sections with pegs added, and finally printed out bit-by-bit, and assembled using an ABS and acetone mix as both glue and filler. Sanded it to hell and coated in acetone to smooth the striations. Already one of the best things Ive ever made.
I took a lot of inspiration from The Action Force Roboskull I had as a kid, and Skeletor's head, of course. This thing is STURDY!! Really amazed with the quality of it. Gonna be proud to have it at a few shows.
As I learned quite a bit about how to re-pose and kitbash models in Zbrush, I was pretty sure I could come up with something cool using Simon Grell's original MWOTR minifigure sculpts.
I got in touch with Mark Vasquez and run the idea by him, he sent me the STL files for the figures, and I got to work!

One thing I love about sculpting in 3D is that without an armature, you don't have to think too much about supports. The ABS material I use is pretty tough and you can adjust the density of parts. On this statue, which was printed in sections and assembles with ol' fashioned garage kit skills, the legs are much heavier than the top. To make sure it's nicely weighted and that the bottom structure can support the top easily.
Wolfrom is hitting the "Wolfpack" (double underhook powerbomb) on Sabre. After drawing 4 issues of the comic, I know the characters well and as these two fought in the first issue, they have stayed in my mind the most as the alpha hero and villain.

Later versions, if they get made, will hopefully see full color paint jobs. But in case you couldn't tell, Wolfrom's standing with one foot on a ring mat, and the other on concrete. Thought it'd be more interesting that ring canvas, or gridiron.

Right. Gotta get painting. Dropping a select number of Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat, and Puppet Master ONE OF A KIND pieces in the Bigcartel shop this weekend.

Cheers!

I don't mind telling you, Leech Woman has been a pain to make. Her thin legs combined with the cold conditions in my casting room have been making life difficult to say the least. But I've finally got a good workflow on and enough of a buffer to deal with demand in good time.
The variants of these two I have in my Shapeways store have been available for a little while and happy to see people people picking them up, but I understand the purist's desire for super high detail rubber minifgures so will keep them coming.

Also, available in the Shapeways store as a print-to-order figure, I've added Jack Attack from Demonic Toys as an adversary for the Cyber Puppet variants you can order there.

Also been adding more stuff to my Shapeways shop. I have a 3D printer now but it can't compete with Shapeways on small scale figures. I've worked out a way of getting full playsets to customers through Shapeays for little more than the price of a single figure. I attach a sprue. It reduced the price by about a 1/3, and I also include large but hollow accessories like the oil drum and the log.

Each set comes with a Billy/Jimmy/Jeff/Sonny style character so you can pick what colors you want to match the characters they represent. Really happy with how they came out. Especially the hair styles - real nice.

Finally, I've taken the plunge and got a 3D printer (got once in a lifetime deal on it too!). As someone who spent a bit of time as a kid putting together garage kits, printing out models in parts, assembling, smoothing, and painting took no learning at all.

I don't want to sound like a negative Nelly Furtado, but the past couple of years have seen the bootleg resin scene get huge, and kind of a price-point competition for who can churn out the most one-part-mold pieces for the least money. So... you know. I'll definitely kitbash and do customs and collabs with 5.5 guys from time to time, but when it gets to being a an exercise in stir and pour labor, I'm kind of pulling back a bit. Not saying it's not fun, cool, and an art form, it's just become tough for guys like me who've gone part time in the day job and want to at least pay rent without worrying. I'm a big fan of bootleg resin and own a lot of other people's work, but the bottom line is I enjoy sculpting more than casting.

Speaking of which... Made a small run of Galaxxor's Fugg character
in flesh rubber and resin that'll be available at C2E2. Always an honor to work with Ben, and never been disappointed with the outcome of our collabs.
I've had a week with my 3D printer, and this is some of the stuff I've come up with so far.
Buildin' up my Shapeways store bit-by-bit. Really happy to see people aren't shy of plastic 3D printed figures and what a great format they can be for minis.

Abobo is my first fully-exclusive 3D print mini. I modelled him in Zbrush to look like the NES version. The flesxible plastic feels really good in hand and Shapeways' polishing is very impressive - especially at the price! Will hopefully get some time to do more figures in the line soon. He's already available at my Shapeways store, in a ton of colors.

I played Double Dragon at the local leisure centre as a kid so much, my mum got me my first console to play it on - the Sega Master System. I know it probably wasn't as playable as the NES version but I think it had nicer graphics. I can honestly say over the course of my life, including other platforms, I've played Double Dragon through about 100 times, and played it many more.

I've also made something fun to accompany the Puppet MUSCLE figures. TOULON'S EFFING CHEST! This is completely free to download and make, and really pops a Puppet MUSCLE display. Have a look, will you?
Other than that, yeah, the resin side has been quiet. The landscape of the "art-toy" scene has changed quite a bit since I started making stuff. I'll never quit but definitely sticking to my guns on making stuff I want to. Whether that means it will be considered less "art" despite having more craft to it or not, is not something I've never made enough money to worry about. Got a couple of toys (one as BMT, and another I just designed the character for) going into mass production this year which will hopefully take the heat off my need to spend tons of time casting, and focus more or using my imagination, sculpting, drawing etc.
New issue of Mystical Warriors of the Ring I can't wait to get started on too!
After handling the first batch of Fake Baron and Puppet MUSCLE test-shot 3D prints from Shapeways, I realised that even the more affordable plastic is not only really durable, but also provides good detail. Not as super sharp as the prototypes I use for casting rubber minis, but if the sculpt was is given deeper etching and less bitty details like shoelaces, and small locks of hair, they come out great.

WHAT YA SELLIN'?

So here's a chance to offer collectors (including myself!) the best of both worlds - I'll still be producing MUSCLE-style rubber keshi with super high details on the sculpts, but there will also be the option to go to my Shapeways store and pick up variants and exclusive figures that have been modified to look great in lower resolution flexible plastic

WHY?!

As a collector myself of most minifigure lines, I like the classic pose of MUSCLE figures and the durability of rubber (and the fact I can send rubber toys overseas at little cost to the customer), looking at figures like Brownoise's Ashurashine, there's no getting around the fact that the lack of need to make a mold means the structure and pose of the figures is limitless. Some people just prefer MIMP and Gormiti with all their variety, and dynamic poses, which are often tough or impossible to replicate with a silicone mold. Also, the colours on these bad-boys are gorgeous.

HOW'S IT WORK AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

In case you're not too familiar with this, my 3D models are uploaded to Shapeways. They will create the figures to order for the customer, and the price is based on their work, material volume, and a tiny mark-up on my end. Shapeways will make the figure, and deliver to you either from North America or Europe, depending on where you are. Orders normally take about 10 days to make and ship via UPS. It works the same way as any online store :)
I was expecting these to be brittle and feel cheap. I've dropped them a ton of times, flexed the limbs a little, and can tell you these are sturdy! Definitely more toy than model!

... All the pics in this blog are the actual products you can get from Shapeways. As I shift more and more to digital sculpting, the exclusives in this store will expand and I'll try as always to find ways to keep them as affordable as possible.

I'm massively satisfied with the project for 2 reasons - It's doing well, and it's my first run of figures I've sculpted digitally and cast off a 3D print. Being highly self critical, unless I spend crazy hours on something, I'm never sure if I've done a good job. I wasn't even going to make Treegarr until Ben Spencer (Galaxxor) encouraged me to.

... but I just love these figures. I would buy them!!

The limited neon run of Tunneler and Blade are very low in number now, and the flesh variants I'll keep doing until the molds die.

Sculpting digitally is the most exciting move I've made since buying a pressure pot and learning how to cast nicely. It really gets your imagination pumping when you know what you can do. 3D printing has become awesome and affordable already. I love it!
Being able to sculpt with CTRL+Z as an option is awesome. I'm sure there are many that would argue that it takes the "soul" out of it. But to be frank, some of the most artistically accomplished indie toys I've seen have had no love given to them, because they weren't pitched quite the right way, or they didn't get endorsed by the right people. I feel like going digital has given me freedom to work in more ways, and do more with the sculpts - print them in different scales/ materials, edit them, and so on. The term "art" in art-toys is thrown around willy nilly anyway. Popularity schlopuratity. Making what I want and people buying it anyway is the best reward I can hope for.
